Odd that the 1st bear video did not show the shot and instant knock down power of this slug. The true power of a shotgun slug comes from its mass. I could not find how much the projetile weighed in comparrison to a Remington slugger that I have seen plant more deer the I can remember at a fraction of the cost.

That bear was dead with the initial lung shot. the fragmented bullet was just a a glorified waste

Those are 1 1/8th ounce. Typical 12 gauge slug is 1 ounce. They sell those as well.

I'll pass this is like a frangible round. They tend to lack penetration due to their rapid expansion at the beginning of penetration. Also, if this round must penetrate any barrier it will deform which severely impedes it penetration when it reaches the target. The new federal critical defense handgun ammo does the same thing. This is not a good feature despite their claims to the contrary. Stick to the reliable foster and sabot slugs or buckshot.

I don't see any rifling marks on the fired plastic, how are these stabilized? Must they be fired from a rifled slug barrel?

I wonder what the jury would say if you shot someone with one of these - in self defense. Some states would probably hang yer ass I would imagine. I think I would just stick with regular slugs to be safe - they would do a better job on someone with BA on - and do the job as good as these without.

Would be neat to launch a few at some targets though.

There is a plethora of odd shotgun ammo as of late, none of it is cheap and its effectiveness is questionable. I agree, stick with regular rifled slugs or buckshot for defense, not these "carny" rounds.

Foster slugs also know as "rifled slugs" are not stabilized by the "rifiling" that is molded on to them. The ridges simply serve t reduce surface area in contact with the barrel to minimize friction and allow the slug to pass through a choke. These slugs are stabilized by being front heavy much in the same way a shuttlecock works.

Good explanation, thanks.

Ditto that - you're asking for legal trouble with funky stuff designed to "maim" the body in some abnormal way. Massad Ayoob writes some good stuff on how to be legitimate in a self-defensive situation. Don't look like you're looking for "action" etc.:36_1_28:

I think that's an extremely lame argument. Using that logic people wouldn't be loading the magazines of their carry guns with high performance self-defense handgun ammo.

If fact, the very same case can be made about buckshot - it can definitely maim without killing even if the hit is center of mass. Case in point: a cop friend of mine gutshot an armed robbery suspect with 00 buck from a distance of less than 7 yards (my friend was on a stakeout, the suspect ran behind the building, came face to face with my cop friend, he was ordered to drop his handgun, he started to raise his pistol as if aiming and he got a round of 00 buck in the gut for his effort). The guy lived, but was ****ting in a bag and in a wheelchair for the rest of his miserable life.

There's nothing 'maiming' about that Hexolite 32 round if it hits center of mass. 32 grams @ 1,400 fps - yeehaw.

TA, those darn FN SLP's are a fricken hoot. FN built the Winchester x3. I think getting blasted with this shot gun, as fast as it is, with some police 00 would just make a huge mess.

The Blood Pressure droping from six Pedals of this round would make it very hard for any animal to have brain function.

If you were able to get off a shot or two into a Big Bears Chest, Fight over in seconds (Probebly less than two)

The rounds wound channels allow for very quick bleed paths and the mulri directional energy dump would be like an M-80 going off in the chest cavity. Shock value would be extreemly high.

I agree deep penetration is tried and true. However, this is a devistateing round and would (IMHO)be a sure kill on most North American animal sized targets with a hit to the thorax.

If you would like to see more "odd shotgun ammo" whose "effectiveness is questionable", look here:

I wouldn't trust any of that stuff, but it sure looks cool!

There's a lot more "carny" shotshells out there than I thought! Lets examine one of them, the "Piranha";

Quote:

12 GA. "Piranha"
This 12 gauge round contains dozens of razor sharp steel tacks that blast out at high velocity which virtually guarantees that there will no response from the perpetrator. Each round is buffed with #12 shot thus creating a double shock to the wound area. Absolutely will not harm your shotgun. To be used no closer than 10 feet and no further than 50 feet. 2 3/4" round.
Sounds like a lawsuit ready to happen, just add idiots. An ambulance-chaser would have a field day with a personal injury case involving something like this.

I always wanted to sneak one of those confetti rounds in to my FIL's shotgun when we do trap/skeet. Just thought it would be funny as all hell, but the range owners might not be too happy with it.

This all assume that it has the ability to penetrate deep enough to do the requisite damage internally. Bears are tough, thick creatures, that require controlled expansion which this doesn't have.
